Face Looks Old Due to High Blood Sugar Levels?

High blood sugar levels can lead to diabetes. In addition, recent studies say that high blood sugar levels make a person's face looks old. Really?

Research conducted Leiden University Medical Centre and Unilever R & D has found an association between blood sugar levels in people with facial age. If someone has high blood sugar levels can lead to facial appear older than their age.

In this research carried out tests on blood sugar levels (without fasting) from more than 600 men and women in the Netherlands.

They were then photographed and 60 observers then asked to provide their estimate of the age of these people based on their photos. Actual age is then compared with earlier observations

The study found that people aged between 50-70 years with high sugar content appear older than those with lower blood sugar levels. The results show that for every increase of 1 mmol / liter of blood sugar levels, a person's face will look older than five months.

Diana van Heemst, Associate Professor at Leiden University Medical Center said the results of this study further demonstrates the importance of controlling blood sugar levels for the health of people in middle age. Perhaps looked younger could be a motivation for people to change their lifestyles to become healthier at around the age of 50-70 years.

Meanwhile, David Gunn, Senior Scientist at Unilever R & D laboratories at Colworth Science Park said was first demonstrated an association between blood sugar levels and the aging face.

Already a lot of research that proves that the blood sugar levels are constantly high is not good for your health, and this study proves that it was also making people look younger.

"Although we know that high blood sugar levels can cause aging of the face, still needs further research to find out what the actual cause," explains David

This study, which was published in AGE, an initiative of the Netherlands Consortium for Healthy Aging aimed at understanding how health can be maintained when a person's age increases.
